Investment sector / Zimbabwe

Agriculture & food

Build a proposition around the land, reliable water, production system and a route to market. Investment can support a farm, shared infrastructure or the businesses that turn agricultural output into higher-value products.

The enterprise perspective

Where value
can be created.

  • Irrigated crops and horticulture
  • Sugar and other field crops
  • Livestock, poultry and dairy
  • Fisheries and aquaculture
  • Food processing, cold chain and packaging
  • Inputs, mechanisation and agricultural services

A useful starting point

Build the case,
one question at a time.

Bring the information you have. Unknowns become preparation tasks; they do not automatically prevent an initial conversation.

  1. Who holds the land and what farming, partnership or development rights can they offer?
  2. What water, soil, power and access evidence supports the proposed production system?
  3. Who will buy the output, in what volumes and to what quality standards?
  4. What is operating today, and what would preparation funding establish before expansion?

Evidence to prepare

Make the proposition
possible to assess.

Describe what exists, its source and date, and what still needs confirmation. Sensitive records should follow an agreed private sharing process.

  • Available title, lease, permit or offer letter, site plan and authority to represent the holder; identify restrictions and unresolved consent questions.
  • Available water agreements, allocation records, seasonal production records, soil information and infrastructure condition.
  • Proposed production cycle, inputs, labour, yields and costs, with assumptions distinguished from measured results.
  • Buyer discussions or contracts, handling and transport plan, budget, sponsor contribution and the specific studies or upgrades being funded.

People & permissions

Know who
needs to be involved.

Ministry responsible for lands and agriculture

Clarification of the applicable tenure, land-use and agricultural development route.

Zimbabwe National Water Authority and the relevant water authority

Applicable water access and abstraction arrangements, assessed for the source and location.

Environmental Management Agency and the relevant local authority

Applicable environmental, planning, building, health and waste requirements.

A land document does not automatically establish a right to transfer, sublet, change use or enter the proposed joint venture. Confirm the terms of the particular holding.

A nearby dam is not evidence of an available water allocation. Confirm the source, permitted use, volume and seasonal reliability.

Food processing, aquaculture and livestock activities may follow different health, environmental and operating routes from crop production.
